Asian Beach Games: Oman teams to begin their campaign today

Asian Beach Games (ABG) in Da Nang, Vietnam will kick off on Sunday with the beach soccer, beach handball and beach volleyball teams in action.

The Games were officially opened on Saturday in the presence of Sheikh Ahmad al Sabah, the Olympic Council of Asia president, and was attended by Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) chairman Khalid al Zubair and OOC secretary general Taha al Kishry.

The ABG, which began on Saturday and will conclude on October 3, features 22 disciplines, with events to be held across five venues.

Beach soccer star Hani al Dhabit carried Oman's flag during the opening ceremony. Former champion Oman takes on Lebanon in its opening clash of the beach soccer event.

The team, coached by Talib Hilal, goes into the match with its confidence high after recording a morale-boosting 8-1 win over China in a friendly game on Thursday.

Oman is placed in Group B along with Lebanon and Qatar in the 12-team event that comprises four groups.

Talib's men meet Qatar on September 27 with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. The final will be held on October 2.

In beach handball, Oman takes on Sri Lanka in the opening clash in a Group B match that has hosts Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong and Afghanistan. Besides beach soccer and beach handball, Oman is taking part in the beach athletics and beach volleyball competitions.

Haitham al Shuraiqi and Ahmed al Hosni along with Badr al Subhi and Nooh al Jalboobi will be in action on Sunday in preliminary beach volleyball events.

The Oman A duo of Subhi and Jalboobi are placed in Group C with teams from Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Afghanistan.

A total of 32 pairs are taking part in the beach volleyball competition.

The Oman B pair of Hosni and Shuraiqi are in Group H with teams from Thailand, Japan and East Timor. The beach athletes will be in action from Monday.
