EU Council Hails Morocco's Human Rights Commitments


(MENAFN- Morocco World News) The Council of the European Union, which convened on Tuesday in Brussels, adopted the yearly report on the situation of human rights and democracy in the world for the year 2015, in which it hailed commitments made by Morocco in terms of human rights.

The report commended the cooperation between Morocco and the European Union, applauding Morocco's key role in the region and internationally.

The EU and Morocco continued their cooperation within international bodies, mainly the council of human rights where the Kingdom has a dynamic role in promoting several initiatives related to economic, social and cultural rights, it said. It also highlighted the scope of reforms undertaken since the adoption of the 2011 constitution, mainly the organic law on regionalization, the judiciary reform, strengthening local democracy, gender equality, protecting rights of the disabled, free speech and the criminal law.

The report noted also the dynamism of civil society, lauding the adoption by the Moroccan parliament of the optional protocol to the international covenant on political and civil rights and the optional protocol to the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.
