Atlanta Civil War Round Table to Present 2016 Harwell Award to David A. Powell for his book The Chickamauga CampaignGlory or the Grave

(MENAFNEditorial) EL DORADO HILLS, CA: August 30, 2016 Savas Beatie author David A. Powell was recently selected to receive the Atlanta Civil War Round Tables 2016 Richard Barksdale Harwell Book Award for his book The Chickamauga CampaignGlory or the Grave, the second title in his comprehensive Chickamauga Campaign trilogy. Powell will be presented with the award at the Round Tables upcoming September meeting, which falls less than a week before the anniversary of the first day of the Battle of Chickamauga.

The Harwell award is given to the best book on a Civil War topic published in the preceding year. According to Mr. Gary Barnes, Chairman of the Harwell Book Award Committee, The members of the book committee were impressed with the enormous amount of research Mr. Powell put into his Chickamauga books. The Committee commented how these tomes helped them to understand this complicated campaign. Enough human interest stories were included along with a tremendous amount of detail to flesh the story out. We believe Davids effort is for now the definitive books on the Battle of Chickamauga.

Powells book Failure in the Saddle: Nathan B. Forrest, Joe Wheeler and the Confederate Cavalry in the Chickamauga Campaign won the Richard Harwell award in 2011, making him the awards first two-time recipient.

This award for David Powells Glory or the Grave, the second installment of our The Chickamauga Campaign trilogy, is especially gratifying, explained Managing Director Theodore P. Savas. Dave has been researching and writing this study for more than a decade, and I have long believed it will be his magnum opus. I am pleased the award committee appreciated its merits, and I am happy for its author.

This installment of Powells tour-de-force depicts the final day of battle, when the Confederate army attacked and broke through the Union lines, triggering a massive rout, an incredible defensive stand, and a confused retreat and pursuit into Chattanooga. Powell presents all of this with clarity and precision by weaving nearly 2,000 primary accounts with his own analysis. The result is a rich and deep portrait of the fighting and command relationships on a scale never before attempted or accomplished.
