Summer is coming to an end, which means that the beginning of the 2016-17 academic year is just a few days away.

As students and teachers prepare for the school start on August 28, UAE psychologists are also urging parents to prepare for problems that may arise when their children return to school, including stress and bullying.

Dr Samra Tahir, clinical psychologist at the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology, told Khaleej Times that it is vital for all parents to keep an eye on any transition in their child, who may often deal with mixed emotions about jumping back into the school-day routine. "Many children tend to stress out because of various factors: A new environment, new teachers, a new syllabus and greater learning expectations. Back to school-time is always a big transition."

Dr Tahir pointed out that it is vital for parents to look at ways that help their children get back into routine swiftly and smoothly. "Parents need to keep their children busy with a mix of physical and academic stimulation activities. Children should be given a set routine for each day so that the transition is not too exhausting."

She noted that positivity is also key in helping children fit in. "Emphasise the positive aspects of the return to school, such as meeting old friends, making new friends, and playing during breaks." Distract and redirect the child's attention towards positive factors of returning to the classroom.

"Ask them what games they played on the playground, the name of his or her desk partner, or if they have any new classmates.

Finally, the key to your child's smooth back-to-school transition is empathy. "Parents need to show a lot of empathy and support in order to boost a child's confidence."
