AER issues licence for Oman's first-of-its-kind solar power plant

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Authority for Electricity Regulation (AER) has issued the licence for Oman's first-of-its-kind solar power plant located in the wilayat of Al Mazyona Dhofar to Bahwan Astonfield Solar Energy Company.

The 303kW solar power plant's production will be sold to the Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAECO) as per an agreement.

Abdul Wahab bin Abdullah al Hinai AER's director of Licenses and Legal Affairs said the licence officially issued on June 1 will be valid for two years - the duration of the power purchase contract signed with RAECO. He added that this plant will open the door for similar or other projects of greater capacities.

AER has initiated development of a proper regulatory framework that encourages the use of renewable energy. Work on renewable energy bylaws and regulations will be completed by year-end he said.

Hinai also said that work is under way to develop a regulatory framework on power generation from rooftop solar cells and the power generated by other plants and exported to the grid. 'Meanwhile work on a 50MW wind-based power plant is under way in Shaleem and Halaniyat Islands in Dhofar. These will be operated by RAECO after construction work is completed' Hinai said.
