Russia affirms support for OIC, calls for Islamic unity

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday affirmed his nation's support for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on basis of "friendship bonds" between Russia and the Islamic world and for sake of regional security.

Lavrov, in a message addressed to the OIC's 42nd session currently hosted by Kuwait, urged the Islamic nations to bolster unity of their peoples and urged that scholars and societies play a role for restoring unity of the nation.

He regretted mounting tension in the Middle East, alluding in particular to the crises in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen. "What is happening serves interests of the extremists and terrorists who plot to form coalitions and usurp large swaths of territories and seek to turn into destiny makers for the Islamic world."
