Britain to train moderate Syrian opposition in Turkey

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Around 75 British military personnel are to be sent to Turkey and other countries in the Middle East region as part of a US military led program to train moderate Syrian opposition forces to fight the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the government of Britain announced Thursday.

The UK is also to dispatch a group of elite military officers and experts to run the operations command center for trainings, due to start in next few weeks for three years, British Defense Minister Michael Fallon said in a statement.

The program will train and equip thousands of screened members of the opposition over the next three years to help them defend Syrian communities against ISIL's brutal attacks before, eventually, leading offensives, Fallon added.

British troops will provide instruction in the use of small arms, infantry tactics, and medical skills, the British Minister said, noting that his country will also send two Sentinel aircrafts to the region to provide wider surveillance over ISIL's activities in Iraq, particularly discovering the terrorist group's explosive mines operations.
