Egypt awards USD112.04m contract for rail system

(MENAFN) Egyptian National Railways (ENR) said that it has awarded Alstom a USD112.04 million contract for the supplying of signaling equipment for the Beni Suef-Asyut line in Egypt, as well as its maintenance for five years, Saudi Gazette reported.

Under the contract, Alstom will provide Smartlock solution to the 240 kilometer-long Beni Suef-Asyut regional railway line, which is expected to be operational by January 2019, thus replacing the existing electromechanical one, as well as supplying trackside equipment, a power supply and a telecommunication system.

The project, which is financed by the World Bank, was launched by Egypt's Ministry of Transport as part of its initiative to modernize signaling systems all over the ENR network, enhancing its operation and increasing the level of safety to match international standards.

"We are pleased to have been awarded this major project which will significantly increase traffic on the line while ensuring higher system availability and greater safety. Alstom has been supporting the country's railway projects for 30 years, including the Cairo metro, and aims to accompany the country for more projects to come," Senior Vice President of Alstom Transport Middle East and Africa said.
