Dubai: An Information Technology (IT) teacher is standing trial in the Court of First Instance on the charge of stealing an iPad of one of her students.

L.B. 29 from Jordan allegedly stole the smart tablet of one of her Emirati students in early June this year.

The teacher’s theft was allegedly busted after she posted an advertisement on a popular website to sell the iPad. During interrogation she admitted to the theft and justified it by her need for money.

An Indian salesman 30 said that he was checking the classified ads online looking to purchase an iPad for his sons.

“I called a mobile number that was posted in the ad and a woman the defendant talked to me. I met her at a metro station on Shaikh Zayed Road in early June and bought two iPad Minis from her for Dh1200” the witness said during the Public Prosecution investigation.

The witness used one of the iPads while the other was locked. “Skype programme had already been installed on it (the iPad that was stolen from the student) and I found a mobile number and I called it. A man the complainant in the theft case answered the phone and I asked him for the password of the other tablet. He asked me about the tablet I was using and how I got it.”

The same day the witness received a phone call from Al Muraqqabat police station and he was summoned there. He then learnt that the two tablets were stolen.

“The woman did not present any document proving she owned the tablets. I did not know they were stolen. She claimed to me that the iPad Minis belonged to her children” he told the police.

A police lieutenant said that an Emirati man complained to Al Muraqqabat police station that his son’s iPad was stolen. “He forgot it at the school he attended. The father then was contacted by an Indian man asking him about the other tablet’s password. He learnt that the Indian had purchased it online from a woman the accused.”

The police visited the defendant’s school and questioned her about the incident. “She admitted that she stole the iPad Mini after she found it left behind by one of her students in a classroom. She claimed she took it as she needed money” the police officer added. The next hearing has been set for January 8.
