Qatar- Ooredoo marathon offers QR1m prizes


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Registration for Ooredoo Doha Marathon 2015 is open, as the company begins preparations to ensure its biggest event yet on January 9.

It will provide an opportunity to meet Ooredoo's Race Ambassador, Liz McColgan, the middle-distance and long-distance athlete who won silver and gold medals at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. The marathon is expected to draw more than 1,500 who took part last year.

To provide more choices for athletes of different abilities, the event will feature a full marathon, half marathon, 10km race, 5km race and special 3km and 1km races for children and young people.

Ooredoo is offering QR1,000,000 in prize money for the winners. Details can be found at http://marathon.ooredoo.qa/public/en. There will be a new city course to provide an exciting challenge for runners, showcase the best of Doha's iconic sites by creating a spectator-friendly venue. Entry fees will be donated to charities in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.

"We want to make the 2015 edition bigger and better. With family-friendly activities, it will be an ideal day out for all the family, and we are supporting people who want to participate," Fatima Sultan Al Kuwari, Director Community & Public Relations, Ooredoo, told a press conference.

Liz McColgan, Race Ambassador, Ooredoo, said, "The event will offer races for committed runners and people looking to start out."

Sarah Whittington, the 2015 Ooredoo Marathon Race Director and 2013 Women's Ooredoo Marathon winner, said: "The marathon will combine a fantastic route, support and latest technologies to help people get the most out of it."

Everyone who registers will get access to a training app, Endomondo, to develop customised training plans based on their chosen race. It can be downloaded on Android, iPhone, Windows Phone and Blackberry and will enable people to track their workouts, view and analyse performance and connect with other trainers.
