Kuwait- Four Champs League groups see 40 goals with huge wins for Bayern, Chelsea, Shakhtar


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UEFA Champions League group matches on Tuesday witnessed a huge goals tally as Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Schalke and Shakhtar Donetsk - with 27 goals between them - all ripped their opponents to shreds.

Eight matches were played from four out of a total eight groups were played on the day with a total 40 goals scored on the day - averaging five goals per match.

In the first match of the day, held earlier due to Russian time difference, Manchester City presented a woeful second half performance against CSKA Moscow in Group E as Seydou Doumbia and Bibras Natkho cancelled out Sergio Aguero and James Milner's two-goal lead in the first.

The result sees City collect another one point in the group, after one more collected in a draw against AS Roma and a loss against Bayern Munich, while CSKA Moscow are rooted to the bottom of the group with only one.

In Rome, AS Roma were thrashed by visitors Bayern Munich in an astonishing 7-0 rout as the champions showed once again their credibility in defending their title, with another three points at the top of the group.

Chelsea were huge 6-0 winners at Stamford Bridge in their home encounter against Slovenia's NK Maribor, thus maintaining their position at the top of Group G with seven points.

Elsewhere, seven goals were scored as Schalke left it to the final minute of original time to edge Sporting Lisbon in a 4-3 thriller, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting making the difference for his side.

The result sees Schalke climb to second, trailing leaders Chelsea by two points, and Sporting rooted to the bottom with only one.

In an another huge result, Luiz Adriano scored five goals as Shakhtar Donetsk tore hosts BATE Borisov apart, 7-0, a Group H encounter that saw FC Porto beat Athletic Bilbao, 2-1 at home.

Both FC Porto (seven points) and Shakhtar (five points) kept hold of their first and second respective places in the group, with Athletic's one point keeping them bottom.

Meanwhile, Barcelona were winners against Ajax in Group F, as Neymar, Lionel Messi and 19-year-old youngster Sandro Ramirez - who rounded up his side's scoring in the 90th minute - made it 3-1 for the hosts at Camp Nou.

The result, which saw Anwar El Ghazi score his side's consolation in the 88th minute, maintained the Catalan side's second place as Paris Saint Germain earned a 0-1 win in their visit to APOEL Nicosia.

Another four groups will be played on Wednesday, the prime encounter of which will see five-time champions Liverpool host 10-time holders Real Madrid at Anfield.
