Oman settles for seventh place in Asiad hockey

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Basim Khatar struck the winner for Oman as it rallied from a goal down to defeat Bangladesh 3-2 in a playoff and clinch the seventh place in hockey in the 17th Asian Games at the Seonhak Hockey Stadium in Incheon South Korea on Tuesday.

Oliver Kurtz's men took their time to settle in but came back strongly in the third quarter after trailing 0-1 in the first quarter. With the second quarter finishing and Bangladesh leading 1-0 Oman equalised through Ahmed al Balushi in the 33rd minute.

Four minutes later Qasim al Shibli put Oman ahead. However Bangladesh drew level just two minutes later but Khatar's penalty-corner in the 45th minute turned out to be decisive.

Bangladesh made desperate attempts in the closing five minutes earning two penalty-corners but Omani goalie Fahad al Noufali stood firm and warded off any threat. Elsewhere Barakat al Harthy entered the semifinals of the 200m event by finishing second in the round-one heats with a time of 21.26 seconds.

His teammate Yahya al Noufali however made a false start and was disqualified. In the women's 200m first-round heats Shnoona al Habsi clocked her personal best time of 26.12s but failed to advance while Mazoon al Alawi ran 25.48s to finish sixth in her heats and bow out. In sailing Oman's Samiha al Riyami finished sixth among eight contestants in the women's Optimist class while Zakariya al Wahaibi was seventh among ten participants in the men's Optimist class.

Waleed al Kindi ended his campaign in RS:X windsurfing with a last-place finish among nine competitors. In shooting Yasir al Nasseri ended his campaign on day two of skeet qualification with a 31st-place finish in a field of 38 participants.
