Dubai: Europe’s Ryder Cup king Justin Rose has capped his continental coronation in characteristic fashion by aiming for the skies again after his heady heroics at Gleneagles last week.

The world number six – who will head to the emirate in November to compete in the European Tour’s finale of the year-long Race to Dubai the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates — played a pivotal role for Paul McGinley’s side as they retained the iconic trophy with a 16.5 to 11.5 victory over the USA up in Scotland.

He quite understandably hasn’t exactly come back down to Earth just yet either with the amiable Englishman clambering aboard the 6.1metre-high wing of a British Airways 747 to raise awareness and funds for his and his wife’s foundation.

Rose was set a task of hitting a succession of golf balls at a target 180 yards away from his elevated perch on the plane’s wing which has a wingspan of 64 metres. Successful shots would win flights for the Kate and Justin Rose Foundation — a charitable initiative that aims to inspire children education experiences and nutrition.

He was joined at the airline’s engineering hangar in London by three former England footballers in Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker Jamie Redknapp and Ian Wright as well as British fashion icon Jodie Kidd.

Those four sporting celebrities are all keen golfers themselves and they duly took it in turns at practising their respective swings before eventually setting their sights on a nearer goal some 160 yards off in the distance.

“The team played outstandingly this weekend and it’s a fantastic feeling to come out of the Ryder Cup as the winning team again” reflected an elated Rose.

“To carry that adrenaline with me on to the wing of a British Airways 747 before flying the aircraft back across the Atlantic was a very special thrill. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and I’m grateful to British Airways for donating flights towards the Kate and Justin Rose Foundation — it will make a huge difference to our campaign.”

British Airways managing director of brands and customer experience Frank van der Post added: “We are delighted to work with Justin once again as he is one of British sports’ most iconic characters. We were pleased to also provide flights to the Justin and Kate Rose Foundation and support the great work they do.”
