Kuwait- His Highness Amir's Representative, Ban discuss terrorism, climate change, Ebola

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's Representative, His Highness Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah discussed with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday the issues of terrorism, climate change and Ebola outbreak.

The meeting, attended by First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, also covered regional issues including the security risks.

Speaking to KUNA after the meeting, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said: "We in Kuwait are particularly interested in these regional issues because terrorism is growing in our region and we should work together with the international community to eradicate it." Kuwait is contributing to an international coalition to crack down on growing threats posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said Kuwait was highly interested in climate change, adding that Oil Minister and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Ali Al-Omair would address the climate change summit, due in New York later this week, to highlight measured adopted by Kuwait to address the climate change.

He noted that the Kuwaiti delegation briefed Ban on the USD five million contribution from Kuwait to the World Health Organization (WHO).

"We are coordinating with WHO and our African friends to provide assistance" against the Ebola outbreak, he said.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled also said they explained to Ban how Kuwait, the current president of the Arab Summit, was supporting the new Iraqi government, the UN Special Representative to Syria Staffan de Mistura and the UN envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar.

He hoped an agreement would be reached in Yemen and the political process would continue in line with the Gulf Cooperation Council's (GCC) initiative and its executive mechanism.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled pointed out that the two sides also discussed the role of the UN and Arab countries to achieving peace and stability in Libya.

Both sides asserted the importance of the resumption of peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis in a way that would provide protection for the Palestinian people and establish their independent state, he went on.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled also said the Kuwaiti delegation thanked the UN and Ban for honoring His Highness the Amir as a Humanitarian Leader and Kuwait as a Humanitarian Center.

"We highly appreciate this initiative from the Secretary General and the UN," he said.
