A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the nurses convened by the Libyan Nurses Parents Association at Kottayam on Friday. A spokesman of the association said they will launch the agitation with a sit-in before the secretariat.

The representatives of the association will meet Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday and present a memorandum listing their demands. The spokesman pointed out that the chief minister had promised jobs and steps to get the wages and benefits due from their employers in Libya.

“We are indebted to the government for all the efforts it made to ensure our safe return but sad that it has not taken any step to fulfill the promises given by the chief minister. We don’t wish to launch an agitation against the government but we are forced as there is no way before us” says Surya a nurse at Kottayam.

She said that the nurses who returned from Libya were ready to work anywhere. Many had applied for jobs in private hospitals in the state. But none of them are recruiting fresh nurses now she said adding that they will not be able to .

Remya another nurse said most of the nurses had returned from Libya penniless. The state government had sought to rehabilitate the nurses who returned from Iraq and Libya with the help of hospital groups in the state and abroad.
