(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The 50 per cent cut on pending fines includes unpaid fines for speeding and other traffic violations available till December 5.The UAQ Police are offering a 50 per cent discount on all the traffic fines incurred on the northern emirate’s roads.

A top officer on Monday said the concession is available from September 1 to December 5.

Lt-Col Saeed Obaid bin Aran Director of Traffic and Patrols Department of the UAQ Police Directorate General said the discount can be availed only against the fines that were recorded by the UAQ traffic police on the emirate’s roads.

“The 50 per cent cut on pending fines includes unpaid fines for speeding and other traffic violations and these may be paid at any service centre across the country.”

Lt-Col Bin Aran noted that the only exception to this discount would be the violations that endanger the life of other road users and result to the impoundment of the vehicle such as driving at more than 160km/ph jumping red signal racing etc.

“In such cases the errant motorists ned to appear in person at the UAQ traffic department and hand over their vehicles for impoundment or pay the set fine.”

He said the concession is meant to cut the financial burdens on the errant drivers and encourage them to pay their pending fines yet be more cautious on the road. “The move is also aimed at helping motorists renew their expired registration cards.”

Giving motorists a discount on fines might help in collecting outstanding fines he said.

After this no more leeway will be given he warned. “By the end of the three-month discount period the errant drivers will have to pay the fine in full without any discount.”

Commenting on the waiver Thomas Edelmann a road traffic expert and founder of the website roadsafetuae.com said to improve the road safety on UAE’s roads education and enforcement should go hand in hand. ‘‘With regards to enforcing rules and to penalise offenders it is vital that motorists are made aware of the fact that the offender will be penalised.”
