UAE- I always turned up with a couple of tapes: DJ Naz

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) DJ Naz resident spinner at Toro Toro in Grosvenor House Dubai tells us about his musical beginnings and why hed like to follow in the footsteps of Ibn Battuta DJ style: Worldly and celebrational. I grew up and have lived in many different parts of the world so my music carries flavours from all these far-flung corners of the globe. Most importantly it’s fun!

Originally from: London England.

Favourite track most people don’t know: Becoming Insane by Infected Mushroom is a song that I’ve been playing for years. For me it embodies everything a good party song should be.

First record you ever bought: Pat Metheny Live in Japan. I bought it at a car boot sale to test the CD player I had just been offered. It opened my mind to jazz and more intricate genres as a result.

When and why he started DJing: I started very young – mainly because I couldn’t stand the music at parties so I had to play it myself. I always turned up with a couple of tapes and somehow ended up playing the music everywhere. I never looked back since – the rest is history and the journey in music continues.

Celebrity crush: Kristin Scott Thomas a British actress most famous probably for her role as the aristocratic Fiona in Four Weddings and a Funeral. She’s understated and elegant in a classic way. I like classic!

Best party trick: Be yourself. Whether you’re playing at a party or attending one the best trick is to stay natural and enjoy yourself. Play the music inspired by the moment and don’t try to be too clever with your choices. This will make you into a party guru!

His most embarrassing moment: I remember turning up at a costume party dressed up and no one else bothered to do the same. Now I laugh about it but back then I felt pretty embarrassed.

Pet peeve: Bad travellers – the ones that hold the queue at check-in because they’re carrying half a house worth of things and arguing about the baggage excess. Meanwhile you’re behind with just your hand luggage and those same people who then at security have to undo half a shop’s worth of jewellery and metal to get past the detector. No wonder so many of us miss flights.

Weirdest dream or nightmare: Conveniently I usually don’t remember those when I wake up. Having an office job would come pretty close to a nightmare I guess.

Favourite holiday destination: San Miguel De Allende in Mexico. This place is magical. It’s so beautiful that when I walk its streets I feel like I’m walking in a postcard. It’s untouched by time retaining all its historical character while providing all the modern comforts. It’s also home to many renowned artists. Everything DJ Naz likes in once place: history arts and comfort.

Ultimate ambition: Freedom to roam the globe at my leisure and in some luxury. I would also like to write about it all and publish a book or even two about my travels in the fashion of my childhood hero Ibn Battuta. At the moment I do it mainly for work and usually have no time to see anything other than airports. The day I achieve that I’ll be pretty content.

DJ Naz performs at Toro Toro from 10pm until closing six days a week. See www.torotoro-dubai.com or call 04 317 6000 for further details and bookings. adamkhaleejtimes.com
