Italy's PM affirms EU strong resolve to back Iraqi Kurdistan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Visiting Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on Wednesday pointed to the consensus and strong will in the European Union (EU) to provide Iraqi Kurdistan with military and humanitarian support.

During his meeting with Kurdistan President Masoud Barzani, Renzi said that the Italian Parliament had agreed to send weapons and humanitarian aid to back the Kurdistan Region in the fight against terrorism of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

He noted that Kurds were not alone in the fight against terrorism and a victory by the Kurdistan troops (Peshmerga) "is a victory for us all".

The Italian PM said his visit to Irbil, capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan, is to deliver a message of support by the EU to the people there.

Renzi visited an Irbil refugee camp for the displaced in Northern Iraq.

For his part, Barzani briefed Renzi on the conditions of the displaced in the region, and expressed appreciation to the EU support which "made the Kurds more determined in the fight against terrorism."

Renzi was received by the Region's Prime Minister Nechervan Barzani on arrival In Irbil coming from Baghdad as part of his one-day visit to Iraq.
