Iraqi Pres. calls for int'l support to face ISIL


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The world should support Iraq in its fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Iraqi President Fuad Massum said here Saturday.

In a statement to the press after his meeting with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Massum said that Iraq was facing a new threat which is targeting minorities such as Christians and Yazidis.

The international community should provide a helping hand to Iraq to fend off the ISIL threat, said Massum who stressed that facing the ISIL terror was an international obligation.

On his part, Steinmeier affirmed that it was imperative to face ISIL, adding that the world was in support of Iraq against the ISIL, noting that his visit to Iraq was to showcase Germany's support to those who were displaced due to the new threat.

Steinmeier arrived early Saturday to provide 24 million euro worth of German relief aid to displaced Iraqis north of the country.

Steinmeier met earlier with his counterpart Hussain Al-Shahristani.
