Germany's Steinmeier arrives in Irbil


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in Irbil, capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan, to deliver aid Berlin is offering to the displaced Iraqis north of the country.

Steinmeier was welcomed on arrival by deputy prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Qubad Talabani, and a host of officials. Later today he is due to meet with Kurdistan President Masoud Barzani, to offer Germany's military and humanitarian aid to back the region's efforts to counter terrorism and help the displaced.

The German FM on Friday said he would visit Irbil to support the Kurdistan Beshmerka forces against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The Kurdistan presidency on Thursday officially urged the European Union (EU) to provide military and humanitarian aid to the region to repel ISIL and restore security.
