EU blacklists President of Chechnya


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The European Union Saturday published in its Official Journal the new list of 15 people and 18 entities targeted by an asset freeze and visa bans linked with the crisis in Ukraine.

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov is also on the list for "making statements in support of the illegal annexation of Crimea and in support of the armed insurgency in Ukraine," noted the Official Journal.

Mikahail Fradkov, director of foreign intelligence service of Russia, Nikolai Platonovich, Secretary of the Security Council of Russia are also included for "shaping the police of the Russian Federation threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine." Several militia organisations in Eastern Ukraine and several companies based in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in March, are also included in the blacklist.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has announced that legislative proposals to expands sanctions on Russia for its "role in destabilising and escalating the situation in Ukraine," were adopted by the European Commission last night.

"The final decision now lies with the EU's Member States, but I believe that this is an effective, well-targeted and balanced package providing the flexibility to adjust our reaction to changes on the ground. I hope that Member States will agree on this package of restrictive measures next week," he said in a statement.

According to EU sources, EU permanent representatives are expected to finalise the new sanctions list which could target the economic and energy sectors of Russia on Tuesday.
