(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) France on Tuesday called on Libyans to agree an urgent cease-fire and resume dialogue within a political process following the results of the June 25 parliamentary elections.
A statement from the French Foreign Ministry said France "pays tribute to the courage of the Libyan people who turned out to vote" last month, even though participation was given as very low at well below 50 percent.
The French statement said that now the results are known, Libyans must move for "the swift formation of the new assembly, so that it can address the challenges facing the country." Not least among these is a threatened secession by former military officers in and around the Benghazi area and fighting has also broken out in recent days around the airport in the capital and near government buildings.
"We also call for the urgent conclusion of a ceasefire agreement in order to put an end to the clashes, notably around the international airport in Tripoli, and for the resumption of political dialogue," the statement said.
"France will continue to support Libya, alongside its international partners and under the auspices of the United Nations," Paris said.
