(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU Monday expressed deep concern "by the significant deterioration of the political and security situation in Libya", condemned the widespread acts of violence and called on all sides to refrain from the use of force and to address differences by peaceful political means and through an inclusive and transparent dialogue.
The EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg discussed the situation in Libya and Issued a statement saying Libya "is at a highly critical stage in its transition to democracy which can be successful if all stakeholders commit to constructive political engagement based on nationally agreed principles." The EU welcomed the holding of parliamentary elections in Libya on 25 June and called on all parties to create an environment conducive for holding these elections in a peaceful environment throughout the country and in an inclusive and credible manner.
The EU reiterated its full support for the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) whose role remains crucial in fostering a political dialogue with a wide and inclusive participation of all Libyan stakeholders.
In this framework, the EU also called on all regional actors to support a peaceful political solution in Libya.
The statement noted that the EU remains committed to assisting the Libyan authorities in the field of border control and security and in fostering regional cooperation and coordination, especially through EU Integrated Border Assistance Mission.
