Oman to mark World Day to Combat Desertification with awareness drive

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Under the theme ‘Land belongs to the Future, Let's Climateproof it', the sultanate on Tuesday will mark the World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD), which falls on June 17 every year. This year's celebration will focus on creating awareness about the strategy required to deal with the effects of climate change, especially in dry areas and promoting natural systems to mitigate the worst effects of climate change.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs will organise a drive to create awareness about the programme to combat desertification in the governorate of Dhofar and plant 300 saplings of endangered local trees in the wilayat of Sadah.

According to the global definition of desertification (UNEP-92), 95.8 per cent of Oman's land area is desert.
