Qatari FM Takes Part in Group of 77 /G77/ Plus China Summit


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Nta cruz bolivia june 15 (qna) -he qatar’s foreign minister dr khalid bin mohamed al attiyah has led qatar’s delegation to the group of 77 (g77) plus china summit.

the two-day meeting opened in the eastern bolivian city of santa cruz saturday night under the theme "new world order for living well" to discuss poverty eradication climate change and the post-2015 sustainable development agenda. the summit also marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the g77 now a coalition of more than 130 developing un member states plus china.

addressing the summit dr khalid bin mohamed al attiyah conveyed the greetings of hh the emir sheikh tamim bin hamad al thani and his wishes of success for the meeting. he also thanked colombia for hosting the summit and for its efforts contributing to its success.

the summit’s holding and the high level of participation attests to the political will of the group and its belief in the joint action under the umbrella of the group 77 and china the minister noted. this coalition is an expression of the developing countries aspirations and gains a significant importance at a time the world is witnessing an aggravating gap between the developed world and the developing nations as well as the fading prospects of world economic revival and its impact on the countries of the south.

this the minister said is added to globalization which is transforming the world economic order and creating increasing challenges to developing countries a fact that necessitate a comprehensive revision and clear positions safeguarding joint interests.

pre-empting the size of the challenges facing the countries of the south because of drought and desertification hh the emir sheikh tamim bin hamad al-thani has launched an initiative at the current un general assembly session for the world’s coalition on arid areas envisaging the establishment of an organization of concerned countries to support world organizations efforts for protecting environment and combating desertification and drought. "we urge members of the group of 77 (g77) plus china to join qatar’s efforts’’ he al attiyah said.

he noted that the group has succeeded in achieving many of the aspirations of the developing nations and in growing significantly. today the group includes almost two thirds of the of the world countries he said.

moreover the group was active in supporting the developing countries on various political economic and social forums and assisting them in coping with current changes and crises the minister noted calling for a vital role of the group in maintaining stability in the arab countries which undergo political changes.

in citing the situation in libya he said that the group has a role to play in talking all parties into accepting direct political dialogue in paving the way for the international community’s support for such dialogue finding a solution to the persisting problems and ending the conflict to maintain the gains of the libyan people since the feb 17 revolution. this is necessary even if such steps need a un security council resolution that would urge all libyan parties to commit to direct dialogue under the umbrella of the un in order to help libya transfer to the phase of construction and development he said.on the situation in iraq he foreign minister dr khalid bin mohammed al attiyah said "we are very concerned about the events and security developments taking place in iraq" saying that the developments happening there were a result of negative factors accumulated over several years. the most important of which are the pursue of narrow partisan policies the adoption of marginalization and exclusion the ignorance of peaceful sit-ins and use of violence and force to disperse them and branding opponents as terrorists he said adding "this of course deepened division and rift between the components the iraqi people and increased the sense of persecution among large groups of iraqis." "in view of these rapid developments we swiftly urge those concerned to pay attention to the demands of large segments of the population who only seek equality and participation away from all forms of sectarian or denominational discrimination. while we strongly condemn terrorism and violence in all its forms and manifests we must however take into account the fact that injustice exclusion marginalization and use of security and military solutions exclusively to suppress popular demands can lead to the interference of other parties fuel violence and contribute to its expansion but does not eliminate it in any way." he urged iraqis to resort to wisdom reason and dialogue in dealing with the current crisis in order to preserve the unity of iraq's land and people and institutions and stay away from anything that would increase the rift and deepens the division.

he dr khalid bin mohamed al attiyah said "the achievement of our common goals to secure a better future for our peoples and our countries require at the present time to focus on dealing with the existing imbalances in the structure of the current international system to lay the foundations of democratic international system that reflects the global reality maximizing our efforts to prevent double standards when dealing with the issues of the developing world and working on consolidating the rules of justice and equality in international and multilateral frameworks by continuing to push for institutional reform of the united nations and its principal organs to enable them to deal positively with the global and regional challenges assume their intended role in international governance and achieve the aspirations of peoples in the developing nations".
