gen next movies are the big thing in bollywood right now. twenty-something actors in fun romantic movies appeal to the tastes of current moviegoers. fugly is one of those films that fits perfectly into this category.
it is a ‘dramedy’ ( drama-comedy) says director kabir sadanand. “it’s a film about parties fun blackmail politics and basically about today’s youth. it is a story of four normal kids who are figuring out their aspirations. then there is an incident which triggers them from inside and they stand up for what they believe in and come out as heroes.”
bollywood superstar akshay kumar produced this movie. kabir got through to the actor through akshay’s mother-in-law dimple kapadia. “akshay kumar came on board through dimple who is a very good friend of mine. she heard my script and asked me to meet akshay.”
kabir tells us that akhay gave him many inputs which he incorporated in the movie to make it far more ‘massy’. akshay not only produced the film but also did an item number along with salman khan to promote the movie to a larger audience.
the director added that after slumdog millionaire (2008) the international market is expecting a lot more from bollywood. they want offbeat stories and not formula stories that they can relate to and which talk about inner angst.
mohit marwah (cousin of sonam kapoor) and indian boxing champion vijender singh make their debut through this film. the director is impressed with his first time actors. “mohit is a trained actor whereas vijender is a natural. they have delivered performances as good as any seasoned actors.”
it is not easy to make friendship look real and convincing on screen. the actors were made to take many workshops where they got to know each other well.
