Oman to take part in Youth Olympic Games


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman will take part in beach volleyball and athletics at the second Summer Youth Olympic Games, scheduled to be held in the Chinese city of Nanjing from August 16-28.

The decision to send only two teams for the Nanjing Games was taken at the Planning and Follow-up Committee meeting of the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) that was held under the chairmanship of Sheikh Saif al Hosni, OOC vice-chairman, on Monday. The committee said that only one woman athlete along with a beach volleyball pair will compete the Games.

The Youth Olympic Games will feature 28 sports and includes aquatics (diving and swimming), archery, athletics, badminton, 3x3 basketball, boxing, canoe-kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics (rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics), handball, hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, rugby, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, beach volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.

The meeting also discussed the participation of national teams at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, (September 19 to October 4); the fourth Asian Beach Games in Phuket, Thailand (November 14-23) and the second GCC Games in Dammam, Saudi Arabia in August 2015.

A final decision on the teams' participation at the Asian Games is likely to be made in the coming week. OOC sources said that Oman may field a strong squad of nearly hundred athletes in seven to eight disciplines at the Incheon Asian Games.
