Al Waab clinch F5WC Qatar title


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Al Waab emerged as champions from Qatar for the Football Five's World Championship after defeating Mackeen Holding in the final at Aspire Zone on Friday. The tournament, sponsored by Qatar Lubricant Co, organised by Legacy Sports/Duplays Doha and supported by the Qatar Football Association (QFA), saw a number of exciting encounters take place on the final day. The 32 highly competitive teams surged their way to the finals, after qualifying in the first and second rounds held earlier this month. Both the teams were locked 2-2 at full time, forcing a penalty shootout. Al Waab was finally crowned champions of the tournament after defeating Mackeen Holding in a tense penalty shootout 3/2. Earlier in another decisive encounter, Al Nasr claimed third place after defeating Damas 4-3. Following the match, the winner's and runner-up were presented their medals and trophy. The presentation ceremony was attended by Fawad Rana € Managing Director, Qatar Lubricants Co. (QALCO), Othman Blake, Events Officer Manager € Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Charles Stephenson, Founder & CEO of F5WC. The Football Five's World Championship (F5WC) is part of a global initiative to select talented amateur football players through regional 5-a-side qualifying rounds to then compete in the Dubai 2014 finals. The very first edition of the Football Five's World Championship in Qatar, witnessed the participation of 128 amateur football teams. The tournament kicked off on May 2 with the first qualifier, followed by the second qualifier on May 9. The victors win an all expenses paid trip to Dubai from June 12 to 14, while competing against 31 other countries at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Prizes also include two branded football kits and tracksuits as well as 10 passes for the upcoming World Cup International Special Event at the Radisson Blu Doha that includes dinner and meet-up with top football legends like Chris Waddle, Gary McAllister and Deitmar Hamann.
