Reel magic: UAE?s latest cinema releases

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) David light delves through the uae?s latest cinema releases

it’s blockbuster week here in the uae and you know that can only mean two things. firstly summer is upon us and secondly expectations will be raised higher than george michael on a flight back from colombia only to be inevitably dashed when the flicks fade into obscurity – a by-product of the silly season.

perhaps that is a little too harsh but when the top draw is a two-hour feature centred on a metropolis-worrying monster (an idea that should have gone out with polio) things don’t look promising. hey ho here we go. here’s what you can get at cinemas from today. (david?khaleejtimes.com)

godzilla

critics have been raving about this incarnation of the tired lizard vs. people franchise and it hasn’t even opened yet. such hype is worrying. yes millions of dollars will have been spent on the visual effects which will impress some. others star struck from bryan cranston’s stint on breaking bad will give the picture more of a chance as his name tops the bill. overall though it is most likely a result of the fact this is the first big blockbuster of the summer that to pan it may mean poor takings for everyone until autumn. whatever the case the plot needs no explanation.

monster is awoken government tries to cover it up ominous warning from bespectacled science type monster goes on rampage. who will emerge victorious we wonder? yawn.

godzilla has a 9.2 rating on imdb and 89% on rottentomatoes.com

trivia

sound designer erik aadahl was provided with the original 1954 recording of godzilla’s roar from toho studios.

ninja 2: shadow of a tear

ninja 2 has the air of ‘indie’ about it. but then so do many skateboarders and they’re generally idiots. true to form this looks rubbish. it’s just fighting. the end.

6.2 on imdb and no score on rt.

trivia

if you’re forced to see this we recommend acme’s sedatives to get you through.

the factory

to call this a blockbuster would be doing a disservice to all those big-budget films but the factory does star john cusack.

a thriller cusack is a cop on the hunt for a serial killer notorious for holding young women in his basement and impregnating them before committing the murder. eventually coming for the policeman’s own daughter cusack has to race against time to save her.

despite not incurring wrath for being a mainstream hollywood production (it isn’t) this one still looks a bit of a dud. it was made in 2012 and pretty much went straight to dvd in the states. it may be worth a punt if you’ve got a couple of hours to spare but you can only imagine what the censor board has done to it so don’t bother.

imdb gives the factory 5.7 and rottentomatoes has no score.

trivia

there are a few continuity errors but they could give away the ending so we’ll give you a fact from another film. adam curtis’ the century of the self is a masterpiece. find a way to watch it.

grace of monaco

now then. we may have something actually worth seeing. the biopic industry (forget diana) is a thriving business and one that can often prove informative and entertaining. from ray to the iron lady these movies have always brought in the punters. while grace of monaco does not appear to have the gloss of the aforementioned oscar winners it should at least prove a interesting distraction if only for the cast alone. the excellent tim roth plays prince rainier of monaco the playboy prince who wed hollywood actress grace kelly (nicole kidman) before effectively condemning her to the role of a glorified housewife.

reports of her descent into depression are numerous but this is the first big-screen take on what happened when the fairytale marriage became a nightmare.

imdb is yet to score the movie and it has 67% on rottentomatoes.com

trivia

in the french version of the film julie gayet the mistress of french president françois hollande assumed nicole kidman’s lead role.
