as flames tore through moafaq al gaddah trading a massive warehouse with over 185 containers filled with tyres and other auto spare parts firefighters from sharjah ajman umm al quwain and dubai battled them from all four directions digging trenches around the building to stop the fire from spreading.

firefighters said this could be the worst of the three conflagrations that have taken place in sharjah since may 4. black smoke was seen billowing out from the site several hours after the fire broke out.

“the warehouse about 100x80 metres contained mostly tyres and other old car equipment” col khalid obaid kanooun director-general of sharjah civil defence told khaleej times. “because of the nature of the contents like tyres there is a lot of heat. that is why the men are taking so long to douse the fire.”

though no casualties were reported the pall of thick black smoke caused a traffic jam in the area for several hours in the morning. there were traffic snarls on shaikh mohammed bin zayed road and near the safeer mall signal in sharjah.

“on saturday morning traffic on shaikh zayed road is usually very light. but today it moved pretty slowly” said nanadakishore kumar a sharjah resident. “i could see the smoke all the way from near the rashidiya exit on shaikh zayed road.”

sri lankan national fazly lantra who lives in dubai had travelled to sharjah to get his car fixed at a garage near the fire site.

“i spent several hours stuck in traffic behind safeer mall” lantra said. “i’ve heard this is the third fire in a week. something needs to be done about the infrastructure in sharjah’s industrial area.”

col kanooun said sharjah civil defence is working closely with sharjah police who are investigating the cause of the fires.
