(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) Responding to countrywide protests prime minister nawaz sharif on wednesday directed the ministry of water and power to reduce the duration of loadshedding to six hours in urban areas.

sharif who presided over meeting of senior officials here reviewed the energy crisis and declared that current scheduled and unscheduled power shutdowns were unacceptable.

sharif also directed the authorities to resolve issues pertaining to fuel supplies to power houses within three days adding fuel should be transported to power plants via pakistan railways. he hoped this would add 3500mw of power by the end of may.

earlier on tuesday evening sharif launched construction of country’s first coal-based powr plant at port qasim karachi which will produce 1320mw of power. the plant is a joint venture between qatar and chinese companies.

speaking on the occasion the prime minister said that 21000mw power will be added to the national grid in next decade. he said the country had produced 23000mw power in 65 years while the projects started by the present government would add 21000mw power in the system.

the people should show patience in the face of loadshedding as the government is leaving no stone unturned to overcome the shortage of power he added.
