the uae registered their third win in a row in the asian cricket council premier league on wednesday to end the round-robin competition with a positive record overall.

a half-century by mohammad shahzad (50) along with contributions from fellow opener amjad ali (20) salman faris (22) and krishnachandran karate (25) helped get the national side up to 162 all out after 38.4 overs against oman at the bayuemas oval.

there may well have been more in it for them as well but captain khurram khan (0) departed for a first-ball duck and ahmed raza (0) also came and went having failed to trouble the scorers after facing five deliveries.

wicketkeeper-batsman swapnil patil (9) shaiman anwar (9) fayyaz ahmed (6) and mohammad naveed (4) couldn’t chalk up double-figure scores either in an innings built around the knocks of ali faris karate and shahzad.

the omanis’ extras (17) were the fifth highest scorers — in theory — during the uae’s time at the crease.

munis ansari did the majority of the damage with the ball in hand with a four-fer (4-43) and was ably supported by arif hussain (2-10) rajesh kumar (1-17) and zeeshan maqsood (1-24).

shahzad and anwar were both run out as the ball was returned back to the stumps with interest and they were found to have come up short in making the necessary ground.

in reply naveed account for oman’s two openers – maqsood (2) and zeeshan siddiqui (15) — to leave the score on 30-2 after 8.3 overs.

hussain (10) was clean bowled by kamran shazad (3-27) six balls later and raza (1-13) and ahmed (3-14) then began to chip away progressively at oman’s middle-to-lower order.

indeed they proved so adept at doing exactly that that their opponents stumbled from 75-4 at one stage to 94-8 in just 10-and-a-half overs.

that collapse exposed the tail and left them 69 runs away from an increasingly unlikely victory.

it seemed a tall order and so it transpired with shazad returning to the fold to dislodge the remaining two batsmen and thus secure a 57-run victory for the uae.

vaibhav wategaonkar (34) was the only oman player to surpass 20 despite starts of sorts for siddiqui hussain and mohammad nadeem (14) as his team was bowled out for 105 after 38 overs.

the uae then have beaten hong kong (by two wickets) hosts malaysia (by six wickets) and oman (by 57 runs) but lost to afghanistan (by 70 runs) and nepal (by four wickets) in five matches over the course of the past eight days since last tuesday (may 1).
