a housemaid has been sentenced to three months in jail for stealing dh35500 electrical home appliances and other valuables from her sponsor while she was sleeping. she was helped by two other runaway housemaids.
the incident happened on december 16 last year when the three housemaids including one indian and two bangladeshis aged 27 31 and 30 took advantage of the fact that their emirati woman employer was sleeping to escape from her house in al qusais after carrying whatever they could in garbage bags.
while the two other accused are still at large the indian defendant earlier denied a theft charge.
the court of first instance ordered that she be deported after serving her prison time.
the emirati businesswoman 44 said she was to pay the electricity water and phone bills on that day and so she had kept aside dh35000. “i was also to renew the residence visa of one of them. i asked her to make a cup of tea for me before i head out.”
however the woman fell asleep in the living room after having the tea. she woke up around 12.30pm and called for the maids.
“my filipina maid told me that she did not see the other maids after 10.30am. she also said that she saw them putting stuff in garbage bags and carrying them in a trolley claiming they would throw them away.”
the employer did not pay much attention to the matter and believed the maids. however she waited for them for half an hour but as they did not come back and would not even return her calls she postponed going out to pay the bills and decided she would stay home. she was shocked to see that the amount of money was gone from her purse.
