(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) has launched the Creation Generation Project, an initiative running alongside the Richard Serra exhibition in Qatar.
For this project QMA will follow the creative journey of one of six local artists who will create a piece of work inspired by Richard Serra, using a variety of mediums from painting to video. The artworks will then be displayed at the Creation Generation Project exhibition that will tour to the Pearl Qatar and W Doha.
The project kicked off last week with the cartoonist Abdulaziz Yousef, who said: "The experience with the Creation Generation Project is giving me solid grounds in my field. It's enabling me to see people's different perspectives that will add to my artistic experience and to the things I create."
It continues this week with Khalifa Ghaith Al Kuwari who specializes in sword making. Khalifa has been crafting his swords since 2005 and over these nine years, he has developed a bespoke style including Islamic, Arab and Qatari heritage at the core of his works.
"I have been inspired by Richard Serra's work when I first saw it. I look at art now from a different and deeper perspective. As artists, we both have our own way of creativity but I will try my best to learn more from Serra's techniques," said Al Kuwari.
The other artists that will be featured in the following weeks are Amira Fareed, Abdulaziz Alajail, Haya Al Thani and Mohammed Abdullah Al Dossari.
"Richard Serra," the most comprehensive showcase of the artist's work in the Middle East, is open across multiple venues in Qatar. The solo show at QMA Gallery coincides with the exhibition of Passage of Time, a striking curved sculpture specially conceived for Al Riwaq exhibition space, and the unveiling of Serra's second public commission in Qatar, East-West/West-East, an extraordinary standing-plate work spanning over a kilometre in length, and crossing the peninsula of the Brouq Nature Reserve connecting the waters of the Gulf.
Richard Serra at QMA Gallery at Katara and Richard Serra at Al Riwaq Doha exhibition space run until July 6, East-West/West-East is a permanent addition to Qatar's public art landscape.
