Climate change meet calls for action


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) E cost of inaction of climate change exceed the cost of action was the final message at the two days climate change conference abu dhabi ascent (ada).meant to bring key governmental decision makers together ahead of the september 2014 new york climate summit to agree on actions that will finally lead to a sign agreement at paris 2015 climate change co-op both un secretary general ban ki-moon and the uae minister of state and special envoy for energy and climate change dr. sultan al jaber agreed that the conference succeeded in what it planned for.helen clark administrator of united nations development programme (undp) reviewed in the last speech of ada what has been said agreed and presented.this include a first ever agreement by the world’s top financial players including the world bank group to put a price on carbon consumption spread across different platforms.financially investments already profit from renewable energy and other green developments the green bonds already set to reach $20 billion by this summer and $50 billion by paris 2015.“in conclusion ada brought many key players together and we hope to reach the top of the mountain” said clark.speaking with khaleej times she pointed out ada’s most important achievement.“ada has brought a lot of existing coalitions and the coalitions have expanded. all the right people have come from so many countries who will be making statements at the climate summit in new york and in paris” she said.one of the silent criticism of ada has been the very small number of non-governmental organisations invited to participate.“one of the challenges for civil society is getting a foot in the door being taken seriously being able to engage. at undp we see it as our duty to keep these doors open. in the end why we do this? we do it because of the people on the planet and we need to hear the voices of all our communities as well as the voices of decision makers” clark told khaleej times.silvia?khaleejtimes.com
