(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani has provided a grant to the American School of Doha (ASD) to establish the Sheikh Faisal Scholar Project for the Arabic Language and the Sheikh Faisal Centre for the Arabic Language.
An agreement was signed yesterday between Sheikh Faisal and Dr Deborah Welch, ASD Director, to commemorate the grant to develop curriculum that targets the Modern Standard Arabic Programme for native Arabic speakers at ASD.
This project involves the development of a proficiency based curriculum and resources to ensure that students will excel and become articulate young leaders in their mother tongue.
This project will also be made possible through Professor Abbas Al Tonsi, a senior lecturer at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar and former faculty member at the Arabic Language Institute (ALI) at the American University in Cairo (AUC). To date, a comprehensive framework for the curriculum has been finalised which includes the development of resources and assessments, while the next phase will include implementation.
A second project of the grant will be the Sheikh Faisal Center for the Arabic Language; a centre that will be built this summer at ASD to be a centre for Arabic resources and knowledge sharing for all interested ASD community members.
Sheikh Faisal said: "This initiative will ensure that ASD students master public speaking in their own language and become confident young leaders when they leave the school, giving them an important head start in life. It will then be rolled out to other schools in Qatar too."
Dr Welch, said, "We would like to thank HE Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani for this grant. He is a strong believer in ASD and the values it instills within our students both in and outside the school. We are happy about this partnership and are honoured to be the flagship project in Qatar, hoping that schools from Qatar will be joining us."
