UN High Commissioner for Refugees Arrives in Jordan


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Amman May 02 - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres arrived today in the Jordanian capital Amman.

A statement issued by the UNCHR Office in Amman said Guterres will hold talks with a number of Jordanian official and the challenges facing Jordan due to hosting of hundreds of thousand Syrian refugees and the ensuing burdens.

The statement said Guterres will underline the need to strengthen relations between the UNCHR and Jordan and means of encouraging the international community to support Jordan in way matching the volume of needs and burdens it is shouldering noting that the UN official will be briefed during the visit on the conditions of Syrian refugees in Jordan.

The UN Refugee Agency said the number of Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries reached 2.9 million. However the Agency received only 24 per cent of the amount it asked for to finance its activities for refugees in the region for this year which amounts to about USD 4.25 million.
