(MENAFN - The Peninsula) Work place related injuries in Qatar every year is 49.3 per 100,000 workers, little more than USA (45), but significantly lower than UK (99) and UAE (136).

Work-related injuries among migrant workers in Qatar are comparable to incidence in the USA according to published data, said Rafael J Consunji, Injury prevention Director, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), at an awareness programme held yesterday to mark the World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in the Industrial area for more than 500 workers.

In a presentation Consunji said that 30 percent of cases seen at the HMC trauma centre are work related injuries according to a review of serious work related injuries in Qatar between 2010 and 2012. Fall from heights is common among incidence of work related injuries.

"We see at least 500 workers every year with serious injuries, like major fractures, bleeding, brain injuries, chest injury where they need major surgeries," said Consunji.

"Fall injury affect around 51 percent of workers and 18 percent by falling objects," he added.

Only one third of the patients brought to the HMC trauma centre were wearing protective clothes, and one in 27 died from their injuries.

"Those who wear the protective equipment do not need to come to see us and do not get serious injuries. An average worker has to stay six days in hospital," said Consunji. However, HMC has only limited information about work related injuries and it is preparing to have a common register together with Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Ministry of interior and Supreme Council Of Health.

The registry will have information including number of major and minor injuries compiled with how, where and why the worker got injured.

"The common register on work related injuries in Qatar will help the country as it will be involved in construction work for the next decade," said Consunji.

"Right now we are not communicating well. I can give data on death and injuries, but I cannot exactly give details on where and how did they (workers) get injured," he added.
