Two suspects held for robbing pedestrians in Sharjah


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The sharjah police on tuesday arrested two stateless citizens for allegedly robbing many persons posing as criminal investigation department (cid) officers.

the suspects identified as s.d.r and h.r.j. intercepted people on streets and led them away to isolated areas after convincing them that they were from the cid by showing fake id cards carrying the logos of the police and the government to take their wallets cash mobile phones and other valuables. a number of victims filed complaints at various police stations. their descriptions of the suspects were similar.

the police formed a team comprising cid officers to find the suspects. the team during a search operation grew suspicious of two stateless citizens who were not carrying any identity documents.

the officers arrested them and presented them before the victims. the victims confirmed that the two were the persons who stopped and robbed them in the streets. the suspects confessed to robbing those people posing as cid officers and using forged documents.the police said this type of crime appeared in the country only recently and that a large number of people particularly asians had fallen victim. with improved awareness police efforts and intensified patrolling the number of such cases had declined.

with this case it seemed that certain culprits had started using this method to rob people again.

the police would not tolerate these illegal acts and exploitation of people a senior officer said.

he urged the public to cooperate with the police by calling 999 or 065632222 or 800151 or send smses to 7999 to complain about any such illegal activity.
