(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Katara has released its latest book Qatar and its Maritime Heritage
The publication by the Department of Research and Studies coincides with the launch of the third Senyar competition for fishing and pearl diving.
It is within the strategy of Katara to revive this ancient maritime tradition and promote its importance and cultural value to Qatar's history.
The book is the result of Katara's efforts to fill the gap, as readers complain about a shortage of references and specific studies on Qatari and Gulf heritage
Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager, Katara, said: "Katara has published this valued documentary book to provide readers and those interested in tradition with a vivid picture of the historical relationship between Qatar and the sea, as it highlights the marine life of the people of Qatar, and forms an important comprehensive reference and educational encyclopedia to teach new generations rich values of civilisation of our ancestors.
He said Katara is keen to publish important books that contribute to achieving its objectives and promoting national identity in the Qatari society by connecting generations with their past civilisation, reinforcing loyalty and belonging to their country.
Katara plays a vital role in realising Qatar National Vision 2030 to make Doha an intellectual destination for all cultures in the world, and maintain elements of the Arab and Islamic identity and cultural heritage, he added
The book has seven chapters on Qatar and the sea historically and geographically. Specifically, it discusses pearl diving, fishing, sailing and timber shipbuilding in Qatar. It also has chapters on common seabirds
