Al Ahli crowned Arabian Gulf League champs

Al ahli fans celebrated their sixth national league’s title following a splendid 2-1 home victory over arch rivals al wasl in a thriller at the red knights’ stronghold rashid stadium here on thursday night.

Ricardo oliveira put visitors al wasl ahead in the opening minutes of the fast-paced clash but the dubai giants bounced back with a brace from ahmed khalil and grafeti to widen the gap to 15 points with only three rounds remaining to pull down the curtains prematurely on the rebranded arabian gulf league.


Having started the season with a super cup triumph over former champions al ain al ahli have also reached the final of the uae league and the president cup to keep their dream alive to sweep the four major titles of the season.


Founded in 1970 after a merger of three clubs al ahli have won this title for times with golden years being from 1974 to 1980 when they have dominated the shield three times in six seasons. in 2005/ 2006 they have won the title for the fourth time and most recently in 2008/2009.


Drawing home-town fans al ahli has been and continues to be one of the most popular sports teams in the uae. howeveral ahli club have suffered a lot in the last decades and they went back to the second division when they played against al shabab which alahli was willing just for a point from the match to stay in the first division. but al ahli has lost the match and al shabab has won the league.


After a period of decline al ahli went back on top winning its fourth league title in 2006 but throughout these years al ahli continued to be a successful club in the uae by winning 8 president cups levelling with sharjah and must be looking forward to set a new record when they face al ain in a dream president cup final on may 18.


This is to be added to two super cups one etisalat cup and an appearance in the 2009 fifa world club cup when hosted by abu dhabi and qualified as national league champions.
