(MENAFNEditorial) Six pupils from The Gulf English School (GES) have been selected to have their artwork displayed in a prestigious national schools' exhibition at Mathaf – Qatar's Arab Museum of Modern Art
The public exhibition at the renowned gallery in Education City opens later this Spring and is the highlight of the second annual Mathaf Student Art Competition and Exhibition, which celebrates the creativity of K-12 students in Qatar and which encourages students, teachers and parents to explore modern and contemporary art.
This year's art contest has the theme of "Black and White" – enabling student artists to focus their ideas clearly and simply. All schools across Qatar were invited to participate in the competition, with the very best selected as finalists, to have their artwork professionally displayed at the gallery
The six GES pupils whose work has been chosen to be exhibited are – Haydon Redfern-Pattison (Year 11), Noor Al Thani (Year 6) and Year 5 students Hamad Al Hababi, Tochi Omah, Noor Mashhadi and Hissa Al Hitmi.
Describing his work of a close-up study of a zebra's face, Haydon said: "I decided to draw something that was traditionally black and white - zebra. I was inspired by the painting of animals, but wanted to make it more abstract. I zoomed in on the zebra's face and focused on the stripes. The curving contours reminded me a lot of human fingerprint. Fingerprints are what identify each person as unique, just the same as the zebra's stripes.
He added: "It is a great honour to have had my work chosen from among all the students in Doha to be shown in this exhibition.
Noor Al Thani described her drawing of a manga-style fairy, saying: "Anime has always interested me. I have always enjoyed anime shows and became interested in how the Japanese created their characters, using simple lines and basic details. I was really proud of how the girl's dress turned out. I like to add in simple shading to create movement to make it more realistic."
GES Primary art teacher Megan Wood congratulated her students on being selected, saying: "I am very proud of our pupils, who relished the challenge of working only in black and white to produce some very talented work. It is testament to their drive and creativity that they were chosen from all the pupils in Qatar to take part in this exhibition.
