UAE- Church gets new premises thanks to Sultan's bounty

The new extension of st martin’s church in yarmook was officially opened on saturday in a programme attended by hundreds of community members. the building has been constructed on land donated by his highness dr shaikh sultan bin mohammed al qasimi supreme council member and ruler of sharjah. the extension was needed to accommodate the growing number of church goers.

The anglican church’s new premises were inaugurated by reverend michael lewis bishop of the anglican diocese of cyprus and the gulf. the chaplaincy council of the chaplaincy of dubai sharjah and the northern emirates the chaplain the local church committee and members of the congregation of st martin’s church were also present.


“the services are held in different languages” said reverend ruwan palapathwala senior chaplain. “the new two-storey building can accommodate different congregations. the numbers of worshippers in the city are going up and we are grateful to the ruler of sharjah for providing us with this space.”
the anglican diocese has about 60 000 members in the uae and about 11000 to 12000 worshippers of different nationalities attend church every week.


Church officials estimate about 200 different nationalities live in the uae.


Reverend john chapman chaplain of st martin’s church said the new building will have a leadership training room and a room for educating youngsters.


“this extension has been the vision of my predecessors” he added.
