(MENAFNEditorial) Committed to developing a centre of excellence in the region for the study of cultural heritage, UCL Qatar, created in collaboration with Qatar Foundation and Qatar Museums Authority, hosted its first open evening for prospective students on 18 March at its campus in Education City. The event was well attended by prospective students, staff members, alumni, and members of the Qatar community interested in UCL Qatar's contribution to Qatar and the gulf region's burgeoning cultural heritage sector
UCL's recently established campus at Education City offers prospective students a chance to play a crucial role in preserving Qatar's unique place in Gulf history, with a range of world-class postgraduate programmes in the cultural heritage sector
Speaking at the event, Kindi Al-Jawabra, a student on the MA Museum and Gallery Practice degree programme, said: "It was great to see so many prospective students interested in conserving and preserving Qatar's past, through studying with UCL and like us, hoping to become future leaders in the cultural heritage sector here and elsewhere in the region.
Attendees saw presentations from UCL academic staff that guided them through the range of degree programmes available, details of the application process, and the wider opportunities available with UCL both in London and Qatar.
Following the presentation students were invited on tours of the cutting-edge conservation laboratories, given an in-depth look at current conservation and archaeological research projects, and had a chance to speak directly with course directors and professors about the unique study and travel opportunities open to them at UCL Qatar
UCL Qatar's programmes include an MSc in Conservation Studies, an MA in Museum and Gallery Practice, an MA in the Archaeology of the Arab and Islamic world, an MA in Library Studies (in collaboration with Hamad bin Khalifa University) and a pre-Masters diploma program. With a significant focus on field placements, UCL Qatar students have the opportunity to be part of international and local research projects such as the recent 'Origins of Doha' excavation at Qubib mosque, awarded as a grant by Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF).
Applications for UCL Qatar programmes are now open; the deadline for applications is 1 May 2014 via the UCL Qatar website.
