(MENAFN Press) The fourth edition of SIKKA Art Fair, the contemporary artist-led fair of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the dedicated Authority for culture, arts, and heritage, has unveiled a culturally enriching programme with over 100 activities to be held over 10 days from March 15 to 25, 2014
Opening on Saturday, March 15, and marking the largest line-up of activities to date, this year's SIKKA Art Fair programme will focus on the entire spectrum of arts “ from visual and performing arts to film and literature “ providing an unmatched showcase on the fast-emerging creative landscape of Dubai
Held at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the cultural nerve-centre of the city, SIKKA Art Fair is a flagship initiative under Dubai Culture's newly-launched 'Dubai Art Season.' It celebrates arts at Dubai's grassroots level and provides visitors the opportunity to engage with emerging artists and gain an understanding of contemporary artforms. SIKKA joins four premier arts and culture initiatives including Art Dubai, Design Days Dubai, Middle East Film & Comic Con and the Gulf Film Festival, as part of Dubai Art Season.
Saeed Al Nabouda, Acting Director General, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, said: "In just four years, SIKKA has become the definitive platform for the grassroots art movement of the UAE, serving as a strong springboard for our artists. It features multidisciplinary initiatives and ensembles that celebrate the newest trends in arts. The diverse programme this year, the largest to date, will provide visitors fascinating insights into how the contemporary world of arts is being shaped in Dubai and while highlighting the city's reputation as a global hub for culture.
On the opening day of SIKKA, March 15, the fair will host screenings by The Animation Chamber and Zayed University; and an electronic music night entitled 'The Board Takeover: Muhaisnah Four. A Shadow Puppets Workshop; the Artists-in-Residence (A.i.R) Dubai Open Studio Tour; and a talk on 'Local and Locality' are other key activities that will appeal to art lovers. Children can discover the magic of watercolours with first hand lessons from Art Anastasia or revel in the magic of the written word with Julia Johnson and The Majlis Gallery's 'The Turtle Secret Book' reading
The entertainment programme on March 16 includes screenings; Carrom Playing by The Magazine Shop; and Light Painting by The Animation Chamber. Those looking to discover their own creative potential can explore the 'Stenciling Kufi Script Workshop' led by Haya Design Studio (on behalf of The Design House) and a 'Wire Puppets Workshop' by The Animation Chamber. Illustration with Dominika Durtan and Lyric Writing with the Rock Camp for Girls will appeal to kids of all ages
Screenings by The Animation Chamber and Zayed University; Lounge & Read by The Magazine Shop; Light Painting; Shadow Puppets, Wire Puppets, and Stenciling Kufi Script workshops, are highlights of March 17. Children can also learn to make 'Al Fahidi Cookie Houses' with Mariam de Ricaud, who will teach them to decorte cookies that are shaped like the walls of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood
The Board makes their encore on March 18, in addition to Ghaf Tree Planting, Behaving Kinetic Typography, and Bookbinding workshops, by Goumbook, Mobius Design Studio, and Michelle Harvey, respectively. Omar Sharif and Marwan Al Khaja discussing the importance of original collectible products in both comics and action figures are part of the SIKKA's series of talks; along with 'Material Vs. Story,' a talk highlighting the link between both factors, by The Animation Chamber
Apart from screenings and Light Painting, Shadow Puppets, and Behaving Kinetic Typography workshops, SIKKA will bring technology to the forefront with additional sessions on Smartphone Photography and the Phenakistoscope, used in animation, on March 19. The fair will also feature 'Grooves & Crackles: A Vinyl Night presented by Desmo Records,' enabling people to connect with the lost medium of vinyls; 'Freud's Naked Truths' by the XVA Film Club, directed by Randall Wright; and a talk by Ayman Itani and Dina Faour on 'Improving the Learning Experience: Academic, Professional, and Digital.' Little ones can also learn about hand weaving with Elise Vazelakis
March 20 features a 'Material Innovation' Workshop by Anne DeChaumont for Zayed University and a Gysum Workshop by the Architectural Heritage Society, in addition to screenings, talks, and workshops. On March 21, The Board returns for round three, followed by TasmenaWALKS; Crafting Leather, Arabic Calligraphy, Comic Book Style Drawing, and Origami Workshops. The Animation Chamber will welcome visitors to take part in 'Realise the Dream Talk' with Boubaker Boukhari, while the Rock Camp for Girls UAE 'Rhythms, Beats & Jammin,' and the Creative Movement Workshop by Rabi Georges, will enlighten children
'Everyone Can Draw,' 'Cutout Puppets,' and 'Sounds of the City' workshops will resonate in the alleyways of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood on March 22, in addition to screenings, and the Dubai Photowalk by the Emirates Photographers Forum. Learn about 'Mobile Escapades,' 'Fashion Illustration of Beginners,' 'Talin,' 'DIY Zine,' and the History of Animation, on the same day. Kids can take delight in Origami, and Sketching & Using a Sketchbook
The Outpost for The Magazine Shop, and a talk by the Architectural Society and Dubai Municipality will enlighten audiences on March 23, in addition to an array of workshops and screenings; while March 24 marks the launch for ISEA2014 by Zayed University, The Carton Takeover by The Magazine Shop, Pinch & Slab Pottery, and Photo Editing and Retouching workshops will provide vivid insights into other forms of visual arts
The last day of SIKKA, March 25, will host screenings, workshops, 'The Design House Feast' and talks by The Design House, culminating with a workshop on 'Build From Your Garbage Bin,' by Mariam de Ricaud for children
