Despite their hard-hitting demeanour on the pitch, local rugby club, the Dubai Sharks, have proved just how kind-hearted they really are by raising more than Dh16,000 for the Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre in Dubai.
During a charity Golf Day held by the club, families, friends and players alike dug deep in a bid to donate much-needed funds to the centre, which provides day care to children with special needs.
Speaking to Khaleej Times following the official cheque presentation, where Dh16,635 was handed over to the centre’s staff and students, the club’s chairman, Mike Quinn, said the event had been one of its most successful yet. “We have arranged a number of other events previously to raise money for the Rashid Centre, but this was by far our largest fundraiser to date,” he said, adding that the centre will always benefit from the club’s future fundraising efforts.
The money raised from the event will see a new interactive white board and some brand new laptops being welcomed into the centre’s classrooms. Commenting on the importance of such support from local businesses and clubs, a spokesperson from the centre commented: “Fundraising is vitally important to the Rashid Centre as it forms a huge part of the centre’s finances.”
Supporting special needs children from the ages of 6- to 18-years-old, the Rashid Centre provides high quality, integrated education services to its students.
Following a visit to the centre by the Dubai Sharks’ previous chairman in 2008, the Rashid Centre became the chosen local charity for the club, and it has since raised thousands of Dirhams in cash for the centre. “As with all clubs in the rugby community, we feel a responsibility to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. If any other worthy cause requires our help, we will do what we can to support them too,” Quinn said.
During the charity Golf Day, cash was raised through ticket and merchandise sales as well as a raffle draw, with British & Irish Lions Rugby legend John Bentley also delivering a guest speech on the night.
With the Dubai Sharks’ final match of the season this Friday, staff and students from the Rashid Centre said they’ll be keeping their fingers crossed for them. “We would like to wish them all the best for the final on Friday. They can count on our support.”
