Qatar Reiterates Commitment on Implementing International Disarmament Conventions


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The State of Qatar has reiterated its full commitment to implement all the provisions and requirements of the major international conventions in the field of disarmament . Qatar noted in this regard that it has been and would remain committed to ensuring the global security and stability as well as its ongoing quest to support all the efforts of disarmament in the world. Qatar's commitment has been demonstrated through its accession and ratification of several major international conventions in the field of disarmament . This came in a speech delivered today by HE Assisatnt Foreign Minister for International Cooperation Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman bin Jassim Al Thani at the CONFERENCE ON DISARMAMENT (High Level Segment) . Referring to Qatar's commitment to disarmament agreements at the national level , HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said that, the National Committee for the arms embargo was set up in 2004 with a view to achieving the objectives set out in international conventions. Qatar also hosted a number of international conferences and seminars on disarmament, and stablished the Doha regional centre for training on the conventions on weapons of mass destruction in 2012, and which is the first of its kind in Asia, he added . He stressed as "important" the Conference on Disarmament in spite of the difficulties and challenges faced by the conference as the sole multilateral disarmament negotiating forum. HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman bin Jassim Al Thani called on all Member States at the conference to exert more efforts in order to reach agreement on a comprehensive balanced work program during its session in 2014 , which will certainly re- activate its efforts , and the restoration of confidence in the credibility of the international community and in its ability to support and strengthen international peace and security . He also stressed the need for political will and the necessary flexibility in order to break the deadlock suffered by the conference , and to reach the ultimate goal to achieve a world free of weapons of mass destructio
