Syrian Crisis Reflects International Community Failure, Qatar Foreign Minister Says

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) HE Foreign Minister Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah said Tuesday that the deterioration of the Syrian crisis and its implications on the humanitarian condition and human rights of the Syrian people represents the biggest challenge to international law. His Excellency added that the past three years of the crisis have shown that the international community have failed to maintain international peace and security, as indicated by article 43 of the United Nations charter. HE the Foreign Minister was addressing a conference entitled "The Syrian Crisis and International Law," taking place in Qatar University Campus. HE Al Attiyah called on the international community to work harder on achieving peace and stability as well as respect human rights. HE the Minister felt it was necessary that the international community intervene in Syria to end the violation of human rights in the country. HE Al Attiyah further said that one of the main issues facing the Syrian crisis was the double standards that the international community deals with, noting meantime that after three years, more than 130,000 people were killed in Syrian and nine million were displaced as a result of the conflict, and yet there is no solution on the horizon in Syria. Yet in Ukraine, the international community intervened swiftly to end the crisis as quickly as possible, he pointed out. Another reason, His Excellency added, is the faulty composition of the Security Council's members, which prevents the council from taking a resolution that pushes for a solution in Syria. HE Al Attiyah stressed that the current membership of the Security Council does not reflect the will of the international community. As a result, His Excellency called for the restructuring of the Security Council to make more capable of facing threats to international peace and security. Such restructuring would include the membership of the council as well as the voting mechanisms , HE Al Attiyah told the conferees.
