UAE: 4 jailed for robbing bank client


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) According to prosecution records, the incident happened on January 21, last year, when one of the defendants, a 33-year-old Moroccan, came from behind the complainant on Al Maktoum Street in Al Muraqqabat, and sprayed his eyes while his compatriot accomplice snatched the cash envelope from his hand



Two Moroccan women who helped them by stalking the bank customer shortly after he cashed a Dh200,000 cheque, have each been sentenced to one year in prison



The two women, including a 30-year-old jobless and a saleswoman, 26, were also fined Dh2,000 each, for residing illegally in the country. The Court of First Instance ordered that all be deported after serving their prison time



According to prosecution records, the two women entered the bank prior to the robbery and watched the customer as he collected the amount. They then called their accomplices and gave them the descriptions of the customer



The bank customer, an Indian clerk, said that he worked for a general trading firm on Al Maktoum Street in Al Rigga. On the day of the incident, he encashed a Dh200,000 cheque for his workplace which he put in an envelope and walked back to his office which was nearby. It was around noon



He was surprised when two men sprayed pepper on him and snatching the envelope from his hand



The envelope tore as he was holding to it tightly and currency notes were dispersed on the street. He could not see the attackers' faces because his eyes were burning



A police lieutenant said they arrested one of the male accused and the two women defendants on March 6 while they were involved in a similar robbery. The main accused admitted he had planned to target bank customers



After the robbery, the accused went to a flat at Al Nahda in Al Qusais where they split the money.
