Qatar - West End Park aims to host more tournaments


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Chairman of West End Park, Mana Ibrahim Al Mana, says he is confident that Qatar will become the sports hub for cricket in the coming years



Speaking on the occasion of a gala dinner and the prize distribution ceremony held to celebrate the overwhelming success of the Qatar International Cricket Women's Championship (QIWC) Al Mana said the success of the championship has demonstrated Qatar's ability and capability to host international cricket championship and other sporting events.



"The success of the championship has encouraged us in our endeavor to host more international cricket championships in Qatar," Mana said



The triangular women's one-day and Twenty20 championship was held under the patronage of H E Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser Al Ali, Minister of Youth and Sports in the State of Qatar.



He said the hosting of this championship in Doha was a huge achievement and a historic moment for the sport in the State of Qatar, as this was the first championship ever to be sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC)



Mana noted that though this was the first time Qatar ever hosted a major cricket championship, it received tremendous support from all institutions and local bodies. The success of the championship has encouraged us in our endeavor to host more international cricket championships in Qatar," Mana added



Expressing confidence at Qatar becoming a cricket hub in the future, Mana said: "The hosting of the International Cricket Women's championship has demonstrated Qatar's commitment in patronizing the growth of the sport in Qatar. The championship was one major step in making the sport popular to all the communities in Qatar."
